2008 ACEC of Idaho Water/Wastewater Engineering Excellence Award

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Idaho honored Welch Comer Engineers with a Water/Wastewater Engineering Excellence Award.  This award recognizes Welch Comer Engineer’s originality and innovation for the Gozzer Ranch Wastewater Treatment and Effluent Reuse System in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. This award is competitively judged by our peers in the engineering field.

Discovery Land Company “Discovery” retained Welch Comer Engineers during the early planning stages of its 350 lot Gozzer Ranch golf course community to evaluate water and wastewater infrastructure options.  Wastewater treatment options were very limited since no municipal wastewater treatment systems were located nearby and discharge to lake Coeur d’ Alene was not a realistic option.
During this same timeframe, the State of Idaho was developing new effluent reuse standards. Welch Comer recommended that Discovery construct a wastewater treatment system that would meet Idaho’s new and most stringent Class “A” effluent reuse standards. This would allow the treated effluent to be stored in a lake located within the golf course and re-used for golf course and landscape irrigation without setback restrictions. Discovery embraced this proposal because it was consistent with their goals of minimizing development impacts.

The Gozzer Ranch Wastewater Treatment and Effluent Reuse System is the first designed, permitted, and successfully operated Class “A” effluent reuse system in the State of Idaho. The system demonstrates that highly treating and recycling wastewater, thereby conserving water resources, can be efficiently and economically achieved through creative engineering.
